Field Geology

Geology is, at heart, a field science. Even though much work is done in the laboratory and at the computer, geological samples and information must initially be obtained from the context in which they occur in nature. Geology is the study of the liquid and solid substances that form the earth. The discipline of geology includes the examination of the composition, properties, and history of the earth materials. The technique of their formation, movement, and changes involved are also studied. Geology survey is an essential engineering discipline that is important for the extraction of minerals and hydrocarbons. It includes topographic mapping that is performed by numerous surveying companies by using modern surveying instruments. Field survey is defined as collection and gathering of information at the local level by conducting primary surveys. The primary surveys are also called field surveys. These are an essential component of geographic enquiry and are carried out through observation, interviews, sketching, measurement, etc. This book features information not found in other field geology texts, including identification and modern classification of rocks, means of recognizing and interpreting primary structures in rocks (which reveal their origin), coverage of engineering geologic maps, and recognition of recently active faults.
